ArtCon 805 Photographic Technology In Conservation

Course Outline

This course will introduce the student to the technical aspects of the photographic medium and its use as a tool for documentation.  It will look at conservation issues in documentation photography, ethical responsibilities, uses and limitations of the materials, and the evaluation of the photographic documentation. The student will learn how to use digital and film-based cameras, digital workflow from capture to various forms of digital out-put, various lighting arrangements, and data management. The photography studio is equipped with two Nikon SLR digital cameras, lenses, an iMac computer, a wide format Epson inkjet printer, a Nikon film scanner, electronic flash and quartz lighting, as well as facilities for photographing a wide variety of works.

Digital Theory / 2d lighting / metering / Intro to Photoshop

3d lighting / managing digital files / sizing, cropping, and resolution

Raking light / UV Flourescence

Relected Infrared

Transmitted light / Macro photography

Photoshop controls / levels, curves, layers, and file conversion

Assessment

Each student will submit a portfolio of work that demonstrates the use of a variety of lighting set-ups, light sources, and documentation techniques (70%). The requirements for the portfolio are detailed in a separate hand-out. There will be one written exam at the end of the term (30%).
