A Dual Credit Focus Program
Photography & Design at St. Lawrence College Focus Program, is a Limestone District School Board (LDSB) and St. Lawrence College (SLC) dual credit program which started in September 2007. In this Focus program, participating secondary school students will:

attend St. Lawrence College , Kingston Campus, 5 days a week for their entire first semester starting in September and ending January.

be team taught by a teacher from the Limestone DSB and 2 professors from St. Lawrence College

have the use of SLC facilities ??media and video labs, library, Student Centre

earn 3 secondary school credits and 2 college credits
This program explores the impact of technology and media on our culture, and offers a hands-on approach to a wide variety of photographic and graphic design processes and techniques. This program is for students wishing to pursue post secondary programs in imaging arts, graphic design, and fine art. Portfolio development for admission to University and College programs is emphasized for senior students. This two college courses (Digital Photography and Design Concepts 1) are required first year courses for the SLC Graphic Design program.
What are the benefits to the students?

Students gain exposure to college programs which will enable them to make better informed decisions regarding their postsecondary destination;

Students will have the opportunity to learn at the college level and earn up to 2 college credits, along with their 3 secondary school credits;

Students will have an opportunity to use college labs and facilities;

Students have an early and clear orientation to college life which includes expectations of adult behavior;
The Challenge/Expectations

Students will be experiencing college courses and college life throughout the semester. There will be high expectations of this group of students to produce quality work and to meet deadlines.

Students will be expected to be in attendance 100% of the time. QECVI will handle attendance issues

As with all college programs, students will need to ensure that they have set aside regular time, outside of their school hours, to study and complete homework assignments in order to be successful.
Who may apply?

Students who are entering into their 4th or 5th year of secondary school

Applicants should be strong students who are flexible, self-reliant, mature and committed to this pilot program.

Students must use the Focus Program application available in Student Services in each secondary school

Students from outside the Limestone DSB who are interested in participating, must enroll at QECVI before September, before the start of Semester 1.

The program is limited to a maximum of 20 students.
Daily Schedule
The daily schedule will run at the same time as LDSB secondary schools. Classes will begin at 9 AM and finish at 2PM. This will allow students to connect with their home school transportation.
Transportation

If within 2.8 km of SLC, students will walk to college

If outside of 2.8 km, student will receive transportation support from their home school to the college through the Focus Program transportation system.

Focus Program transportation forms must be completed at the same time students are registering for this Focus Program. These forms are available in Student Services..

Students who choose to drive cars and use SLC parking must cover those costs. Special situations will be considered on an individual basis.
Credits Earned
Students will have the opportunity to earn 3 secondary school credits and up to 2 college credits.

*Applied Design (AWD4M) and Design Concepts 1 (GRAP 101), and Communication Technology (TGJ4M) and Basic Digital Photography (GENE6) will be team taught by a secondary school teacher and college professors.
Course Completion

Students who successfully complete this program will be granted dual credits and receive a secondary school report card and an official college transcript.

Transferability: Similar programs in the college system are required to meet common specific learning outcomes. Often, courses are transferable between colleges offering similar programs and are evaluated on a course by course basis.

Future admission to any college program still requires the standard application, acceptance and registration procedures.
